TOEFL (USA) and IELTS (UK)

You may be required to prove you can speak English when you apply to enter an English-speaking country as an immigrant or as a student, or to apply for a job.

TOEIC Test of English for International Communication is designed to measure the ability of non-native English-speaking people to use English in everyday workplace activities, especially those in an international environment.  While the TOEIC is acceptable for admission to some educational institutions, it is used mainly by corporations and governmental agencies to test a potential employee’s ability in English.

TOEFL Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL is designed to evaluate a non-native English-speaker’s capability to use and understand English in an academic setting.  It can be a requirement for admission to English-speaking colleges and universities.  Other types of organizations may also require this test.  It is usually listed first in the USA but is usually acceptable as a second choice by institutions in other parts of the world.  However the Australian government does not accept it for immigration purposes.  Colleges and universities usually consider only the most recent TOEFL score within the previous two years. The TOEFL company says that the results are good for two years.

IELTS — International English Language Testing System It is sometimes referred to as English for International Opportunity It is owned by Cambridge University and the British Council with the participation of the Australian government.   It is more open to International English, including British and American and Australian English, than is TOEFL.   It is the certificate of first choice in Britain and many other English-speaking countries like Australia, New Zealand and Canada and is acceptable in all USA universities.  It is also used by employers and government immigration agencies which require proof of English language skills as part of their recruitment or admittance procedures.  There are two versions of this examination (1) General English and (2) Academic.   Immigration agencies may require the General English option rather than the Academic. There is no time limit on the results of the IELTS although the examiners do recommend that  there should be a review of the candidates English after two years and most Universities insist on this.

Cambridge University Certificates –  First Certificate in English (FCE): Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): Certificate of Proficiency in English(CPE) the English as a Second Language (ESL) Department of Cambridge University offers certificates at several levels from everyday written and spoken English at an intermediate level to the most advanced academic or general English by those who are very high achievers, close to the level of native speakers.  There is no time limit on the results of the CPE.

GMAT – Graduate Management Admission Test It is used by Graduate Business Schools to test the ability of applicants who seek admission.   It has two components – Mathematics and English.

GRE – Educational Testing Services   Some universities, colleges and scholarship-granting organisations require applicants for post-graduate degrees (Masters and Doctorate) to have passed the English component of GRE which certifies that they have the ability to read and write general or academic English to the high standard required for post-graduate research and dissertations. GRE also has a Mathematics component.

The Importance of Speaking and Writing.

All examinations test the candidate’s proficiency in Reading, Listening and Structure (Grammar).  This is usually done through multiple-choice questions.

The major examinations also test Speaking and Writing.  These skills need much preparation and practice because there are no multiple-choice options – the candidate must speak and write from their own resources.  In fact, some colleges require a higher score in Writing than in the other components of a certificate. That is why I offer intensive training in Speaking and encourage my students to practise Writing by inviting them to submit their written “homework” in emails as often as they like without extra charge so that I can grade it and offer comments and suggestions for alternative vocabulary, phrases and grammatical structures.

Academic Standards

My academic standards are guided by the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR) as well as criteria issued by the various British, USA, Canadian, Australian and other examining bodies.   This is relevant if you want me to help prepare you for an examination such as TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, CPE, GMAT or any of the Cambridge certificates.
